As Magnolia Culture was getting ready to open its doors of their first store in Galata, I was commissioned to create decorative works to complement their bookshop. The co-founders, Zeynep Özcan and Yelda Süren Elmas, were finally actualizing a long dreamed passion. I still remember the enthusiasm they carried with them entering my studio in Pera at the end of the summer 2012. Motivated by their excitement, I was eager to come up with a distinct line for them. At the time, I was doing lots of blown and cold cut works with a bohemian look. I wanted to surprise our customers with a totally different technique and theme. And that is how Animal Kingdom, a series of kiln casted animals from wild nature, started off. Our joint love for animals made it an easy task to come up with the choices of animals. Our first creation; the owl was soon followed by the horse and every following season we added two new animals: the frog, seahorse, resting dear, dear torso, parrot, rhino; for autumn 2014, a giraffe and a polar bear. Limited to 50 pieces each, this exclusive collection became a collector’s item and is now on shelves of Magnolia Culture’s Nisantası store, along with books of prominent international publishers.
