'Evil Eye' Wall Art

Many cultures have traditions and symbols to keep the evil eye away. I personally like ours as it is very aesthetic and enriches its surrounding and it is almost always in glass:))  On the other hand, I have seen many other figures such as in Africa and Australia where you would not want to be near them! I guess that works as well if you want to keep something away:))

A tradition we have imported from our Arab neighbours is 'Mashallah' - that is an Arabic phrase that expresses appreciation, joy, or thankfulness. Said 41 times, a 'Mashallah' is guaranteed to bring good luck and fortune to the intended.

Well, I thought a combination of the 'Evil Eye' and 'Mashallah' should really tie the knot as I came up with this piece where I engraved 'Masallah'  41 times in kufi letters around a hot-formed glass evil eye.

Having this piece in mind,  I was commissioned to make a special wall installation at the entrance of a new residence. I had a plain canvas of almost 150 cm by 200 cm in front of me. As it was the exterior wall of the entrance, I wanted to capture some of the beautiful garden and its surroundings as I used forest greens and deep Bosphorus blues in my piece.

This week I had the opportunity to visit the owners and take a closer look at the installed piece With spring in its full bloom, and judas trees on fire,  I thanked the universe for the natural beauty embracing my piece.  May God give this new home joy, health and love for years to come...
