Introducing Ottoman Tulip Tumblers!

Background: From the Metropolitan Museum to MFAH, Texas

Following the debut of the Heirloom Project at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Shop, for our second collaboration with designer Madeline Weinrib , we designed the Ottoman Tulip Tumblers for the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. Shaped like a tulip, the flower most popularly used throughout Ottoman visual culture, these are mouth-blown and hand crafted glass tumblers. While often affiliated with Holland, tulips are in actual fact a flower native to Anatolia, and have been used widely as a motif in art from the region since the 12th century!

Heirloom Project and Madeline Weinrib

Led by iconic textile and home designer Madeline Weinrib, the Heirloom Project was initiated to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Met's reimagined Islamic Wing by seeking engagement with global craftspeople who pursue ancient techniques and design principles. The project later moved on to other museums including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston who have an impressive Islamic Art Department.

Madeline recently visited Istanbul in light of the Heirloom project and this trip was recently covered by the famous Indagare Travel .

“When traveling, my perfect day always includes a visit to an artist or designer studio. On my last trip to Istanbul, I had the pleasure of visiting Fy-shan Glass Studio, which has ready-to-make pieces as well as bespoke. I saw a gorgeous custom glass bar that Fy-shan made for a customer. I myself would like to customize a chandelier—now that’s my idea of a perfect souvenir.”

Wide range of colors

For the MFAH, this uniqıe tulip shaped glass tumbler was created in six exquisite colors - Turkish blue, Cobalt Blue, Tourmaline, Sunset, Rose and Amethyst. Our gaffers mouth blown each with attention to detail and the tumblers are finished with hand painted contrast rims which are heat sealed.

‘Türban’ to Tulips

Tulip is Turkey’s national flower with its roots going back to Ottoman era where it would grow in wild. Tulipa is the Latin word for tulip which is derived from Tulipan, meaning "turban".

“Most people think that tulips originated in the Netherlands with how iconic they are over there. But, they actually came from Central Asia where they grew as a wildflower. And they were first cultivated in Turkey around 1000AD. The tulip name actually comes from the Turkish word for ‘türban’ for their similar appearances”

Tulips adorn the public gardens all around Istanbul in spring time, including the 16th century Ottoman Palace of Istanbul, the Topkapı Palace. One of the best examples of the famous türbans used by the Ottomans is portrayed glamorously in the Bellini painting of Sultan the Mehmet II , at the National Gallery of London.

Animal Kingdom: Unique Pate-de-Verre Glass Sculptures

Our newly added Animal Kingdom collection includes some of our finest cast glass sculptures. Pate-de-Verre is an intricate and time-consuming process that necessitates a high level of artistry, and it is used to make every piece in the collection. Feleksan Onar, with the team, draws inspiration for each of her stunning works from the natural world. So what makes the Animal Kingdom collection of glass sculptures so unique?

Our Inspiration for this Collection

Artists have long looked to the natural world for inspiration, and that's certainly the case at Fy-shan Glass Studio. Our Animal Kingdom line draws its inspiration from the natural beauty and awe of the animal kingdom. Each sculpture has its own unique personality and narrative to tell, from the majestic grandeur of the Lion to the lively vitality of Rio the parrot and the playful agility of the frog. Each glass sculpture created in the studio is an attempt to capture the spirit of a particular animal and bring it to life in a way that is both beautiful and original.

Pate de Verre Technique

Pate-de-Verre is a glass casting process that dates back to the Middle Ages. Casting kilns use high temperatures to melt and fuse glass into molds formed from plaster copies of hand-sculpted clay originals. The glass object can only be retrieved by fracturing the plaster mold, hence a fresh cast is needed for each edition. To avoid bubbles, cloudiness, and shattering as the glass cools, this technique calls for expert control. The end product is a one-of-a-kind work of art in glass.

Art & Design Collide : The Glass Sneaker Installation Piece

We're delighted to introduce our new installation piece, a unique work which blends Felekşan Onar's art practice with the design products of Fy-Shan Glass Studio. These cast glass and completely handcrafted solid-glass sneakers are a humorous and striking touch for any home. The size of the piece is true to original Vans sneakers that have been used by the artist herself. The resulting work has all the intricate details of the original pair of sneakers including the sole of the shoes!

Lifesize and uncannily lifelike too, the sculptures are perfect to place beneath a lounge chair or at a home entrance - sure to be a conversation-starter with guests!

About the Nazar history:

A spiritual symbol that dates back over 5000 years, the evil eye was said to be present even among cultures of the Upper Paleolithic age, before trickling through ancient Greek and Roman Civilizations and then into Turkey and the Middle East.

Always a symbol of interest in our work, this year our evil eye range includes a whole new color palette, from Aegean blue to amber, from tangerine to ruby red! 

Our glass talismans this year come in three forms.

The first one is the Nazar accent piece, crafted from mouth-blown incalmo glass.

The incalmo method involves fusing together still-molten pieces of glass of contrasting colors and forms. As a result, there will be a distinct line separating the two colors. The Nazar Accent Piece makes use of this technique to stunning effect, making it appear as though the eye is suspended in the glass.

Second piece in our Nazar series is the handsome Nazar bookend, a sculptural piece set on top of a cast metal base.

Glass fusion is heavily featured, which wonderfully blends the colors together to create a one-of-a-kind look and feel. The wavy glass and the hand-polished metal base are only two examples of the piece's meticulous handcrafting.

Finally, we have the striking Nazar sculpture.

This is a totem of six mouth-blown glass evil eye spheres on top of one another. The sculpture is displayed on a spherical, polished metal base that draws attention to its singular shape. With its majestic blue hue and intricate patterns, this piece is sure to be a discussion starter wherever it goes.
